Let the Hate Flow Through You
Tidebringer is the phoenix of the band Shark Infested Daughters, which in itself achieved success from 2012-2018. After a few line-up changes, it only seemed right to rebrand and start over, but still pay homage to the existing fanbase; “Tidebringer” draws from the previous bands single of the same name. After the change, Chris and SID/Tidebringer guitarist Oliver Carter-Wells recruited Calgary locals Jared Boyd and Brandon Flaig to fill in the gaps left by parting members.
Tidebringer started working with Producer Jordan Chase at Oodelaly Recordings to help bring the sound and new direction of Tidebringer to life. Through this process, they recruited Ryan Loerke (Secret and Whisper, Shreddy Krueger, ex-Spritbox) to consult for drum production and writing. As a result, Ryan joined the project full time.
“Tidebringer was a refreshing reminder of the intense and brutal music I grew up listening to” said Ryan. “I drew a ton of inspiration from bands like Soilwork, The Agony Scene and Slipknot - Tidebringer’s anger and edge fits right into that sonic landscape perfectly.”
The final piece was finding that perfect singer who could accurately depict the lyrical content and emotion tied to each song, while bringing their own unique dynamic to the team. Working with former touring mate, Twitch Streamer and solo artist Kurtis “KALA” Lloyd on early demos for the project, it felt natural to bring him on full time to help front the project. “I really believe in Chris” states Kurtis. “I’ve seen him play in bands before, and I know he's extremely talented. I want to be part of the project because I want to help him make his artistic goals come true and help him craft the music he wants to make. It also gives me what I want, because I don't have any heavy music projects, so it satisfies that hunger ”
Tidebringer has a lot to prove as a project - it's a departure from SID that had certain expectations and a successful formula. “Throughout the years of touring we've encountered a myriad of bands and people in the industry who claim to be something they're not. Many of the lyrics touch on individuals, or past experiences that reflect on these events, and the individuals we used to call our friends”, explains Thoresen. “Make metalcore pissed again is a callback to bands wearing it on their sleeve, and not following the same formula as recent years - with crystal clear pop style recordings and phoned in content. Tidebringer gives us the opportunity to lead by example, with like minded members who believe in the art, and the emotion behind the music. This was the catalyst to choosing each member/team, as we've all experienced failed projects where it became less about the art, and more about the image.”
When asked about why Tidebringer chose it’s team this way, Chris stated, “We're sick of working with people who are fake as fuck. In every project we've all been in, certain members like the IDEA of being in a band, more than actually being in a band. It becomes more about clout and ego - and not about the music.”
